No question the thing needs a good buffer, anyway, and I would prefer to have it single-ended, just so I don't have to change everything over to balanced to make it work. As far as features, including the number of inputs, why not have a +/-modular,...

N-set, have another look at the Chimera "bias", and the sophistocated way the diodes effectively buffer the gain stages, also the way the caps are staged over the tiered ground planes. Also check where the Ls are with respect to the signal. Perhaps...

Ah, the current source!! Serge, you must be right. Ironically I did hear about this method of extracting cartridge signal by Dynavector when I used tier 507 arms but I forgot about it. If am not mistaken the Dynavector is not a phonostage by just vol...

Hi!English's not my mother language so I'd have advices to choose wich Melquiade could be the best for me...I read that there's a lot of different versions...and I wasn't able to email Romy because of the robot barrier.I've very good 95db Fullrange B...

You may remember I also use transformer shunting for attenuation, in my case the taps are selected by "communications" shunts/relays. My output is quite low R, but variable, and only the transformers for isolation (no "active buffer". I was wonderin...

Yes, my DSET is fundamentally the same as yours with 6 channels, three fullrange, 1627a for Channel C. The largest difference is probably that my DHT channel has its own B+.My preamp is quite different though, being a hybrid based on 10y. It has a ...

Well, the pros always say, all balanced, and ground everything, and this is the usual short cut to quiet, long cable runs in complex systems. I think Guy H will make something for you if you can explain to him what you want. Again, while one buffer ...

Ideally, you'd want to drive 35 feet of balanced interconnect with the low impedance source ( say below 150 ohms or so). How low depends upon interconnect capacitance. You can try Jensen output transformer to convert SE to Balanced at the phono-stage...
Have put all my DHT's on the curve tracer to see if pairs can be matched for preamp duties.
It was very interesting to read about all of it. If you have a socket for YO186 then you can accommodate all 4V tubes and I si...

The reads of my site know that for many years I am a huge
fun of the Placete Active preamp. In my new listening room I faces a problem
that I have not enough gains with some material. The room kind of big and it is
integrated with video. Many vide...
The preamp has the classic tube regulated power supply using 5R4, 6AS7, 6SJ7. It is transformer coupled output and has no capacitor in the signal chain, the gain is about 8db, so it is not a buffer. For convenience, it does...

I did not make my mind about it but I have some “concerns”. Using SS amps and hearing different SS amps I do not like their bass and the notion of a powerful enough DSET to be able to drive ULF in A1 was born. Sounds logical. However, recently I ...

A few days back I got rid of the 60-year old Germanium glass diodes in the REL detector and put in there the regular 1N4148 4pF low-signal diodes/ it was quite positive improvement. I need to be said that detector diodes are not the regulars diodes b...

Adrian, I wrote extensively about the TAP in its own thread. Given good electricity, the pairing of K&K and TAP is a pretty clean gain path for the cartridge, with far more range, color, etc. - everything you'd want - in the end than the pr...

Thanks, Jim, and thanks to everyone who replied in direct emails. Summarizing what was advised to me it looks like as now the input impedance of the amp is around 4.5K. That was roughly what I would like to have, though I would like to go even furthe...

It six month as Lamm released his LL1 preamp but I do not see any “jitter” about the sound of the unit. Even the Lamms’ leash-driven, in-house bitches from Soundstage do not publish any “review”. I did not see even any talk online about LL1. This is ...

I know, I know, it is absolutely not NECESSARY and I do not think that I see a need for it. I however see that it might be USEFUL in SOME cases when a recording was mastered by a complete idiot.
So, I wonder if anyone comes across to very high...

Erik, I do not think a resistor in series would do as it will burn on itself some voltage and the coil will be driven by the same voltages. It would be good to put in place of the resistor a rheostat and to slide it up and down while slide up and dow...

Ronnie,I do not know any. But the major question is why such a crossover is necessary. Obviously it requires 3 amplifiers and if so then the filters might be built in the amps. It one needs it for system prototyping purpose then if is fine but the de...

The Morons™ at AA’s between selling to each other what they did not like and topping each other on their shoulders came up with a subject what horn installation would be if price would be no object. The question is semi-foolish as price is never ...

Nope I’m not familiar with Octave Research OR1. I heard about Andy Rapapport but I never heard or have seen his amps. My thinking about all of this has littler rational and even less experience. I would never think about SS but the phenomenal success...

I have a problem with navigation on your site so I probably missed the post explaining why preamp should bare the response for absolute transparency ?You reserve the right for the amp to inject an X factor and the sources can do what they wi...

Ronny,
I moved your post to the Placette thread. I hope you do not mind. What I fine interesting in this subject is not that fact of Placette wonderful transparency - it a fact but that you (and I in past) were trying to challenge Placette with a tub...

then the idea of amp bypassing is relevant to the "clean signal" discussion. But regardless of the measured voltage out vs. driver sensitivity I suspect that there is too little of something in the way of drive and control between a&n...

I am not sure I follow the TV analogy...I think that the best course where any sort of voltage divider/attenuator is concerned is to do it without messing up the audible results, of course, but also to keep it as "neutral", "transparant" an...

I am with you on this one. I am also very suspicious of gigantic, 4-chassis phono stages if only because I just wonder why the need for all those damn noisy parts, along with concommitment connections? So it really pisses me off to admit that th...

I would like to post it into this thread, as somebody who cares about S2 should know what I ended up.
Anyhow, now it is officially: I permanently removed a tweeter from Macondo. The properly voiced S2 driver (with a transparent enough track- h...

If the high ac voltage of the Melquiades amp is what allows it to operate with the same coupling cap that doesn't work with the buffer, perhaps there is some hysteresis going on in the capacitor. In that case I think it may help to use a smaller cou...
... I cannot imagine where the fuck I should have a loop???
And you are not alone. Any single person who is chasing noise in phonostage ask himself the same question. I assure you that sun of later you will find it and it...
